This project, situated just west of the historical center of Zierikzee, links up the existing neighbourhood Poortambacht to the historic town. Both as a reaction to the specific character of the site and as a response to today’s diverging lifestyles, the design for this new quay, parallel to a canal, can be seen as a reinterpretation of the quay typologies that can be found through the provinces of Zeeland and Holland. The Science Park is hemmed in between the Flevopark, the neighborhood of the Indische buurt and the Amsterdam-Almere railway line. Until recently, the site was occupied by allotments alongside research institutes and science and technology companies. The allotments are to be replaced by five new residential buildings situated in a park-like environment of restricted traffic speeds. Car-parking is located within the buildings so the area’s appearance is not defined by on-street parking. As ‘Het Kasteel’ (the castle) stands at the entrance to the project, on the west side facing the city, it acts as its calling card. Read the rest of this entry »

Hotel Zenden by Wiel Arets Architects

The Hotel and Sport School Zenden is located within three monumental town houses near the river Maas in Maastricht, the Netherlands.  The hotel’s history begins in the late sixties, and originally contained only a pool for swimming lessons. Over the years other functions such as hotel rooms and a Judo school were implemented into the program. Important, from the residents point of view, was to experience the green environment in a most intense way. This ambition has formed the main concept of the building: A house that feeds in between the trees, giving every arbitrary movement a surprising perspective on the forest. The square-shaped volume keeps you, while moving through the building, in constant contact with the environment.

Culture Campus Vleuterweide Informatieplein by AEQUO

The Dutch design studio AEQUO have designed an informatieplein (information plaza) inside the Culture Campus Vleuterweide in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The Informatieplein is shaped as the interior space of a monastery. It contains one large monastery bench, which comprises a multitude of functions upon closer inspection.
